What we do
The Special School education provides the opportunity for students with EHCP’s to access education through an alternative education to the traditional mainstream methods. Students are taught in small groups and sometimes 1:1 to allow for a personalised education.
The core curriculum comprises of English, Maths, Science, ICT, Personal Development and PHSCE, although each student can study to GCSE level we know that sometimes this is not appropriate and other pathways are available. At KS4 students also get the opportunity to study two options at our Options Centre and can choose from Art, Childcare, Design Technology, Food and Sport. Students also have the opportunity to take up some Vocational activities with accredited training providers.
All students who attend the Special School have an EHCP or are in process of obtaining an EHCP. It’s our mission to support the student in the next stage of the young persons education.
A small number of students attend our very specialist support unit which is delivered off site, this is all delivered 1:1 in the community and often vocationally based.
We also have ‘The Hub’ this is a small unit for students who have ASD or ASD traits, these pupils follow a similar but slightly adapted curriculum which best meets the student’s needs.
The Special School is a very personalised environment, it allows students to develop and ensures the next steps in life are successful ones. Additional Therapy can be provided where appropriate to enable our students deal with any circumstances that have been a barrier to education in the past and build self-esteem.
We see the next steps and post 16 as a vital part of our work and we have mentors with school to support students on to there next part of their journey.
